Everyone love McDonald's including people in Hong Kong, but do you know the different between U.S. McDonald's and Hong Kong McDonald's?
McDonald’s is the largest restaurant chain in the world. McDonald was started in 1955 by Richard and Maurice McDonald’s in San Bernadino California. This food chain has 35000 outlets in total across 119 countries. McDonald is also one of the famous fast food restaurants in the US, with the sale is about 7.67 billion U.S. dollars (Statista). In 1979, McDonald’s started the first shop in Hong Kong(McDonald’s). As McDonald’s wants to be more suitable for Hong Kong People, they change some of their Management Strategy. For example, provide more service to the customer which U.S. McDonald’s does not have; this is the reason why McDonald’s becomes the most popular restaurant in Hong Kong.
Hamburger is the signature product of McDonald’s that is why the traditional menu for burgers does not change in both places. For example, McDonald’s in Hong Kong get French fries, Big Mac and milk milkshake and McDonald’s in the U.S. also have them as well. As Hong Kong is prioritised on tourism growth, people in Hong Kong care about the service as customers, no matter what it is, this is why one of the differences between the U.S. and Hong Kong McDonald’s will be the service. In Hong Kong, McDonald’s has waiters during the dinner time; customers can choose if they need waiters to bring food to them or not, also when customers finish their meals, staff will tidy up the table, take away trays and trash for them. On the other hand, customers will not get any services, and they need to tidy up the desk by themselves after eating in Amacrines’ McDonald’s since Americans prefer doing them by themselves as their responsibilities. Another big difference will be McDonald’s in Hong Kong does not have a driver take out, but they have delivery. Since Hong Kong is a “busy city”, most of the workers in Hong Kong are very busy, a limited amount of time will never allow them to drive and grab food. Therefore, they will order delivery instead. But in the U.S., people prefer “slow-paced life”, they enjoy being casual such driving out to order food. At this point, the cultural difference will be the lifestyle as Hong Kong people prefer time efficient whereas Americans prefer casual.
For the level of popularity of McDonald’s, McDonald’s in Hong Kong are more popular than Americans because Hong Kong is a tiny city, as the largest food chain in the world, McDonald’s did not have many competitors, people can see McDonald’s everywhere in Hong Kong. Also, McDonald’s in Hong Kong do a lot of advertising and promotions; these three reasons help McDonald’s create effective commercial possibilities to make McDonald’s become more well known in Hong Kong. On the other hand, the U.S. is a vast country that people cannot find a McDonald’s easily. Also, McDonald’s get a lot of strong competitors; this makes McDonald’s cannot get people attention easily even they try to do some advertising and promotion. This is why McDonald’s in Hong Kong are more popular than in the U.S.
